The docuseries
Taken: Natalee Holloway is a three-part Netflix docuseries scheduled for release on Wednesday 4 November 2026, with all episodes available at once. It is directed by Dani Sloane and Matthew Galkin and produced by Story Syndicate.
Netflix says the series includes previously unseen footage, unreleased audio and material connected to the FBI investigation, and features Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother.
What happened: a factual timeline
May 2005: the disappearance. Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old from Mountain Brook, Alabama, was on a high school graduation trip to Aruba. She was last seen in the early hours of 30 May 2005, leaving a nightclub in Oranjestad with Joran van der Sloot, then a 17-year-old Dutch student living in Aruba, and two brothers. She did not appear for her flight home.
2005 to 2008: searches and arrests. Aruban and Dutch authorities, with volunteers and the FBI, carried out extensive land and sea searches. Van der Sloot and others were arrested more than once, but released for lack of evidence. The case drew intense international media coverage.
2010: extortion and a murder in Peru. In 2010, van der Sloot contacted the Holloway family offering, for money, to reveal where her body was. He was paid and gave false information. Days later, in Lima, Peru, he murdered Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old student. He was convicted in Peru in 2012 and sentenced to 28 years in prison.
2012: declared dead. A court in Alabama declared Natalee Holloway legally dead at her father's request.
2023: extradition and confession. Van der Sloot was temporarily extradited to the United States in June 2023 to face federal extortion and wire fraud charges over the 2010 scheme. In October 2023, as part of a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty and gave a detailed account of killing Natalee in 2005, saying he disposed of her body in the sea. He was sentenced to 20 years in US federal prison, to run concurrently with his Peruvian sentence, and returned to Peru.
He has not been convicted of Natalee's murder. Under Aruban law, the statute of limitations had made prosecution there impossible.
2025 to 2026. Van der Sloot remains in prison in Peru. Reports in 2026 said he had asked to be transferred to another prison, citing threats from other inmates.
Why the case still matters
- It shaped true crime coverage. The case became one of the most heavily covered missing-person stories of the 2000s, and critics later questioned why some missing-person cases receive far more attention than others.
- It changed how families advocate. Beth Holloway became a campaigner on traveller safety and founded efforts to support families of missing people.
- The confession came 18 years later. It provided an account, but not a body, and some questions remain unanswered.
Watching responsibly
The series deals with the death of a young woman and the murder of another, Stephany Flores, whose family has also lived with the consequences of the case. Expect distressing material.
